In Years 7 and 8, each Â鶹ÊÓƵstudent experiences introductory Music courses, encompassing the fundamentals of beat, rhythm, pitch and melody writing, with a strong emphasis on development of aural skills.
For students wishing to extend their learning further, the Year 8 Performance Music subject offers a a more challenging and exacting level than that offered in the core Year 8 Music course. The Performance Music students are provided the opportunity use their individual music lessons (voice or instrumental) and College ensemble participation towards their assessment.
From Year 9 onwards, students have the option to continue with Music as an elective subject. Topics covered at these levels include all styles and genres of music, compositional styles and forms, history of music, as well as performance and listening skills.
Â鶹ÊÓƵCollege students are afforded an extensive range of Co-Curricular Music opportunities, including:
Individuals and groups may also participate in the City of Toowoomba Eisteddfod, combined school festivals held in Toowoomba and Brisbane, in addition to performing at community events throughout the year and participating in co-production musicals for the wider community.
Past musical productions have included Oliver!, Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, Music Man and Titanic. The most recent production was Footloose the Musical, co-produced with Toowoomba Grammar School.
Studies have indicated that students who learn a musical instrument tend to develop their cognitive skills at a faster rate. The physical activity involved with playing a stringed instrument for example, combined with the intellectual focus, engages both sides of the brain in a way that is quite unique. The benefits of learning a musical instrument cannot be overstated!
Students may elect to study an instrument or voice through a comprehensive Music program at Â鶹ÊÓƵCollege. Full time Music Teachers or visiting Specialist Music Tutors offer lessons during school hours, or at lunchtime, before or after school by arrangement.
The following Music Tuition opportunities are available to all students at the College:
As well as the many performance opportunities provided to our girls during the year, students may undertake AMEB or Trinity College examinations.
